How this is decided

The weather, in one band

The mean apparent temperature between 10:00 and 20:00 local — the hours a body actually spends outdoors, rather than the peak the thermometer touched. The thresholds are these:

freezing< 2 °C+12%
cold2 … 12 °C+6%
mild12 … 22 °C±0%
warm22 … 26 °C−3%
hot≥ 26 °C−6%

The correction to the budget

Cold genuinely raises resting expenditure and heat genuinely suppresses appetite; the direction is not in question. The size of these numbers is a planning convention, not physiology:

wind over 20 km/h on a cold day≥ 20 km/h+4%
over 3 mm of precipitation on a cold day≥ 3 mm+3%
wet-bulb above 22 °C≥ 22 °C−4%

How a dish is chosen

For each slot, one sum is computed and the largest wins:

  • ×3 seasonality — the share of the dish’s weight that is in season here today (fresh 1.0 · stored 0.55 · out of season 0.1)
  • ×4 budget reach — whether the dish can meet its share of the day at all inside 0.5–2.5 portions. On an ordinary day this term is near-identical for every dish and decides nothing; it only starts separating candidates when the budget is at an extreme
  • ×3 thermal match — 1 minus the distance between how hot the dish is served and how hot the weather is asking for, over 4
  • ×1 time at the stove — an hour of cooking is penalised in the heat and costs nothing in the cold
  • ×0.35 rotation — a deterministic hash of dish, date and place, so Tuesday is not Monday

How the budget is split

Breakfast 25%, lunch 35%, dinner 30%, snack 10%. The portion is scaled so the slot lands on its share, in quarter-portion steps and never outside 0.5–2.5. Scoring alone cannot guarantee the day adds up — the best-scoring dish for a slot may simply be too light to fill it — so the day is assembled first and repaired second: the slot missing its share by the most is re-picked from dishes that can actually reach it, at most one swap per slot. If the budget is still not met the page reports a shortfall rather than inventing a serving.

The constraints

  • Gluten-free and lactose-free are hard filters, not demotions, and both are derived from the ingredient list rather than tagged by hand.
  • Gentle means no ingredient marked harsh, nothing fried, and “harsh raw” — onion, garlic, tomato, apple — neutralised by any cooking at all.
  • Energy is a target rather than a tag: 0.8 · 1.0 · 1.25 of the baseline. That is why low and high share one control and cannot contradict each other.
